Hilton
Head Island's beaches are among the most beautiful in the world. 12 miles
of white-sand beaches, in a lush green picturesque environment make Hilton
Head one of the most beautiful locations in the US. The sands are extremely
firm, providing a good surface for biking, hiking, jogging, and beach
games. At high tide, many of the beaches remain wide for most activities,
except biking. At low tide, the width of the island's beaches is enormous.
The majority of beaches on Hilton Head are public. Lifeguards are posted
at only the major beaches, and concessions are available to rent beach
chairs, umbrellas, and water-sports equipment.
There are four public entrances to Hilton Head's beaches. The main parking
and changing areas are on Folly Field Road, off US 278 (the main hwy.)
and at Coligny Circle, close to the Holiday Inn. Other entrances (signposted)
from US 278 lead to Singleton and Bradley beaches. The most frequently
used beach is adjacent to Coligny Circle: the North and South Forest Beach
(enter from Pope Ave. across from Lagoon Rd.). You'll have to use the
parking lot opposite the Holiday Inn, which requires a daily fee until
after 4pm. The adjacent Beach Park has a washroom and changing area, as
well as showers, vending machines, and phones. Folly Field Beach offers
washrooms, changing facilities, and parking.
